Laxey & Lonan Heritage Trust
Laxey and Lonan Heritage Trust exists to promote interest in the Laxey Wheel and all its associated structures, the history of mining and the heritage of Laxey Village and Lonan Parish.
The Trust holds regular events, including Social Evenings. Slide Shows and Guided Walks. A Newsletter is produced three times a year. Membership of the Trust is open to everyone, on or off the Island. There is also a Gift Shop and Information Centre situated in Mines Road, Laxey which is open from Easter until the end of September.
In 2004, the Trust took delivery of two steam engines, the Ant and Bee. These are replicas of the original engines which were used to carry ore from the Great Laxey Mine to the Washing Floors in readiness for other processes to take place. The Trust have rebuilt the railway line to the mine and are now carrying passengers on this journey in a specially-built carriage. The Railway operates from Easter to October on Saturdays and Bank Holidays from 11.00 am. until 4.30 pm. The line runs from the Valley Gardens to a point opposite the Laxey Fire Station.
The Laxey Mines Research Group, in conjunction with the Laxey and Lonan Heritage Trust are in the process of restoring the Snaefell Mines Water Wheel which had been found in a state of neglect in Wales. It was brought back to the Island in pieces. The Wheel when completed will be 50 feet high and is being installed in the Valley Gardens (formerly the Washing Floors). It is hoped that this enormous task will be completed later in 2005.
Anyone interested in joining the Trust or requiring further information, should contact the Secretary.
